Our history & milestones

IVCC was established in 2005 with a mission to develop innovative vector control solutions to combat insecticide resistance and prevent disease transmission. With initial funding from the Gates Foundation, we have spent nearly two decades forging global partnerships across industry, academia, and the public sector. Together, we’ve accelerated the journey from innovation to impact—saving lives and shaping the future of vector control.

Our team

Justin McBeath
Chief Executive Officer

Justin joined IVCC as CEO in 2023. He is responsible for the development and delivery of IVCC’s strategy. He brings with him more than 25 years of experience working in various international leadership positions related to the development, registration and marketing of mosquito and other pest management solutions. For the past twelve years Justin has led the malaria vector control strategy for Bayer Environmental Science (now Envu) and has an established strong network across the global malaria community. Justin graduated from the University of Leeds with a Bsc (hons) in agricultural zoology. He also holds an Msc in Medical Entomology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Chris Larkin
Director | Communications and Operations

Chris joined IVCC in January 2017 and is responsible for the company’s communications and advocacy strategy, as well as holding operational responsibility across areas including administration and HR. Chris works with a range of stakeholders, including the IVCC Board of Trustees, industry and funding partners, academic institutions and international advocacy organisations. Chris is a graduate of University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and holds a BA(Hons) in Politics and Geography. He has over 20 years’ experience in leading communication and engagement strategies across private and public sector organisations. Prior to joining IVCC, Chris spent six years as Director of Communications at Salford University. Previous roles include Head of Brand and Communications at Marks & Spencer plc, Account Director at Hill + Knowlton Strategies (a WPP company) and Senior Press Officer at Nationwide Building Society.

David McGuire

David is a member of the IVCC Management Committee and is responsible for the development and delivery of the Access components of IVCC’s strategy. He also oversees the implementation of forecasting and market shaping projects to ensure wide-scale access to all vector control tools developed with support from IVCC. David has worked for the past 30 years designing and managing public-private partnerships to increase the availability and use of health products and services related to maternal &child health, HIV/AIDS and malaria. Since joining IVCC in 2015 David has led successful efforts under the Next Generation IRS (NgenIRS) project and New Nets Project (NNP) to expand access to IRS and dual active ingredient bednets through partnerships involving national malaria programmes, donors, implementers, manufacturers, mining companies and NGOs. David is currently leading efforts to further expand the availability of vector control tools through innovative private sector funding and distribution models focused on High Burden/High Impact countries.

David graduated from the University of Vermont and completed his graduate studies in International Relations at L’Institut Européen des Hautes Études Internationales in Nice, France and earned a certificate in Global Strategic Management through the Harvard Business School’s Executive Training Program and is fluent in French. Serving since 1991 in management and leadership positions in the USA, Asia and Africa, he has become a thought leader in public/private partnerships for health. He was a founding member of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership’s Vector Control Working Group, has served on the Private Sector Delegation to the RBM Board and has presented congressional testimony regarding market-based approaches to malaria control. David has also been a contributor and advisor to international organisations, private companies and academia.

Mathias Mondy
Director | Portfolio and Grant Management
Portfolio & grant management

Mathias manages three teams: project managment, legal and finance. He is responsible for:
– Development of the portfolio architecture by defining priority focus and the project management framework use by IVCC and partners.
– Strategy implementation by ensuring that projects and partnerships contribute to IVCC’s mission.
– Securing the resources needed by developing a trustworthy relationship with key public/private funders and by maintaining full compliance.

Mathias graduated as an Agronomic Engineer from Agro Paris Tech and spent 17 years in industry before joining IVCC, working for companies such as Rhône-Poulenc, Aventis and Bayer. At these organisations he held different responsibilities, including: product development, business intelligence, portfolio management, marketing, and stakeholder engagement. He later specialised in stakeholder engagement and advocacy in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Dr Derric Nimmo
Director | Technical Development
Technical development

Derric manages the IVCC technical team, evaluating new active ingredients and innovative vector control tools. The technical team works with industry and academic partners to bring innovative and sustainable tools for vector control to the market.

Graduating with a PhD in Molecular Parasitology and Entomology, Derric has 25 years’ experience in molecular entomology and field research in a range of insect vectors of disease. He has experience in product development and technical leadership, including the technical development of innovative vector control tools. He is also experienced in performing and leading field studies in several countries, intellectual property and patents, regulatory engagement and submissions, community engagement and cost of goods. With a focus on insect genetics, entomology and field deployment of novel mosquito control tools around the globe, he is motivated by the practical application of current and novel tools for vector control to make a real difference in people’s lives.

Leo Smedley
Senior Finance Manager
Portfolio & grant management

Smedley’s role involves providing professional and strategically focussed accounting and management support. She is responsible for acting as a dedicated finance contact to IVCC and its diverse network of internal and external stakeholders. She is also responsible for coordinating and maximising the effectiveness of IVCC’s managed services functions through the provision of accurate and timely financial information for planning, reporting and compliance purposes. She is a member of IVCC’s Leadership Team. Smedley graduated with a BA(Hons) in Politics, Philosophy and Economics and is a fully-qualified accountant by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. She joined the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine as a Senior Management Accountant with responsibility for the group’s UK subsidiaries and overseas entities. Her previous appointments include statutory finance directorships and board membership of two SMEs and Audit Manager at two Global Accountancy Firms, specialising in complex audit and reporting engagements that included a portfolio of AiM listed groups.

David Worrall
Director | Legal
Legal

David provides advice and support to the IVCC team on all matters with a legal, contract or intellectual property element. This includes advice on the various contracts which IVCC manages as a successful product development partnership. He is also the interface to specialist external legal support, and support from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine contracts and other teams as required. David studied law in Leicester, UK and Modena, Italy and has an LLB(EC) and LLM in European and International Trade Law. He has broad commercial and contract law experience and is qualified as a solicitor with international law firm DLA Piper, where he specialised in commercial, IP and IT matters. David has worked as an in-house lawyer where his experience has become broader still. For the last 10 years he worked at Manchester Metropolitan University, most recently as Deputy Head of Legal, with periods as Acting Head.

Danielle Brennan

Danielle is responsible for overseeing the ITN portfolio at IVCC, which includes working with industry partners on multiple ITN development projects and facilitating ITN strategic discussions. In her previous role at IVCC, Danielle was responsibility for overseeing the Project Management Office which included the development and maintenance of IVCC’s customised project database and standardisation of IVCC’s portfolio processes. Danielle graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Forensic Science from the University of Central Lancashire. Following university, Danielle worked on international development projects based in Central America and Sub-Saharan Africa. There she focussed on community issues including environmental sustainability, food security and gender roles within the home. More recently, Danielle has worked as a youth and family coordinator on leadership programmes supporting young people to develop social action projects that will have a positive effect on their community.

Andrew Deyi Saibu
Africa Regional Coordinator
Market access & country engagement

Andrew’s key responsibilities are to provide coordination, oversight and day-to-day management of country-level engagement for partnerships. He works on NgenIRS and the New Nets Project. He is also responsible for project management support and working with NMCP/MOH officials and implementation partners to collect and compile IRS and LLIN campaign data, from both PMI campaigns and NMCP campaigns funded by Global Fund or with a host country’s own funding. Andrew graduated with a master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Ghana and a Commonwealth Executive master’s degree in Business Administration (CEMBA) from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. His previous roles include NgenIRS Regional Coordinator in West Africa for Abt Associates, Project Coordinator for the Rural Emergency Health Services and Transport (REST) project for the Catholic Relief Services and Operations Manager and Malaria Country Director in Ghana for RTI International.

Helen Fletcher
Project and Business Administrator

Helen provides administrative support to the IVCC team. Prior to joining IVCC, Helen worked as an administrator in the Department of International Public Health at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. She previously worked in the commercial and banking sectors and chiefly for a management and business start-up consultancy, providing project management support and administration of government-funded regional training and development programmes.

Dr Christen Fornadel
Senior Technical Coordinator
Technical development

Christen provides technical leadership, coordination, and oversight in support of IVCC products from development to launch, including monitoring and evaluation of novel vector control tools and the design and implementation of market interventions. She successfully led the New Nets Project and previously supported the NgenIRS project. Prior to joining IVCC in 2018, Christen was a Senior Malaria Vector Control Specialist with the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), USAID (2013-2018). At PMI Christen contributed to global strategy and country-level planning for malaria mosquito control, including entomological monitoring, insecticide-resistance management, and implementation of indoor residual spraying and long-lasting insecticide treated nets. Before joining PMI Christen completed her graduate studies at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where her doctoral research focused on the foraging behavior of malaria mosquitoes in rural Zambia.

Kath Gleave
Field Entomologist
Technical development

In her role as Field Entomologist, Kath is responsible for supporting technical activities in IVCCs core insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) pillars. She supports laboratory and field trials designed to aid vector control product development projects with partners, by coordinating specific technical resources and contributing technical input.

Kath holds an MSc and a PhD from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, with a specialisation in the complex relationships between vectors, parasites and insecticides when considering the development and assessment of new experimental procedures to test vector control products. Kath previously worked as Postdoctoral Research Associate within Innovation to Impact (i2i) identifying priority areas around improving methodologies for the generation of vector control product evaluation and monitoring.

In prior roles she also worked on projects assessing the pleiotropic effects associated with insecticide resistance, and how dual active-ingredient nets can reduce clinical incidences of malaria in different insecticide resistance settings.

Renaud Govoetchan
Field Entomologist
Technical development

In the role of Field Entomologist, Renaud oversees laboratory and field trials to support vector control product development projects with IVCC partners. Within the technical team, he works closely with industry partners, collaborating research facilities and other stakeholders to ensure that sponsored studies are conducted efficiently and to the required standard.

Renaud holds a MSc and PhD in Medical Entomology with a wealth of experience in the conduct of malaria vector control tool registration evaluations in laboratory, semi-field and community settings. Before joining IVCC, Renaud worked as a Research Fellow at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and as a Study Director in the GLP compliant CREC/LSHTM Test Facility on laboratory and field trials of IRS and ITN products. He also previously held technical and advisory positions with important organisations such as the US PMI VectorLink project and the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

Terri-Lee Holmes
Senior Legal Counsel

Terri-Lee is IVCC’s Legal Officer, working closely with David Worrall (Group Legal & Intellectual Property Advisor). Her role is focussed exclusively on IVCC and Terri-Lee is responsible for helping to support the IVCC team with all things Legal and Contracts. This includes working across IVCC departments on particular contract matters and cross department objectives (such as contract management), and also working with David on broader IVCC policy and governance matters. Terri-Lee is a qualified solicitor who studied Law and completed the Legal Practice Course at Liverpool John Moores University. She has previously worked as an In-House Solicitor in the private sector offering advice in the tech/retail industry and enjoys working within companies to ensure their contract management is streamlined, efficient and effective.

John Hughes
Finance Manager

John’s role as Finance Project Officer involves acting as the lead financial contact responsible for providing the financial deliverables associated with grant management of the New Nets Project to ensure smooth, effective delivery. He is responsible for implementing and ensuring compliance with finance related policies and procedures, financial monitoring and funder reporting in support of IVCC’s wider portfolio of grants.

John graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Accounting from the University of Hull and is a part qualified accountant with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). He joins IVCC directly from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine where he was a Finance Project Officer supporting a large portfolio of grants from various funders for the Vector Biology Department and for IVCC including the New Nets Project. John also has 8 years’ experience of working within the public sector having previously worked for the NHS at Wirral CCG in a finance capacity.

Karen Johnson
Senior Project and Business Administrator

Karen is the Senior Administrator at IVCC for the NgenIRS, New Nets Project and Access Teams. She assists the aforementioned projects by providing administrative support for staff members based in the UK and around the world. Along with organising events and logistics in the UK, Europe, America and Africa, Karen also acts as a liaison with external partners and international funders.

Karen graduated with a HND in Business and Finance from John Moores University, joining IVCC in 2010. Prior to joining IVCC, Karen worked for many years in the printing and newspaper industry, within the pre-press and ad creation departments.

Sara McManus
Project and Business Administrator
Communications & operations

Sara’s role is to provide professional and efficient administrative support to the Senior Project and Business Administrator, Project Managers and the IVCC Team. Her responsibilities include travel management, financial processing and monitoring, production of management reports, SharePoint site development and access, manages the organisation and delivery of regular peer group review meetings for ESAC, IPI and ATSB, and is the lead on the administration and maintenance of the ESAC recruitment process.

Sara was Project Coordinator for Innovation to Impact, when she provided comprehensive project management and administrative support to the Director and Project Manager. She joined Innovation to Impact from the Centre for Maternal and Newborn Health (Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine) in 2017. Prior to that she worked within financial services for 12 years, followed by 9 years in the private sector, which has given her a wealth of organisational and operational experience.

Larry Norton
Senior Project Manager

Larry works on the Research and Development portfolio, offering support and expertise across collaborations with industry and academia, to ensure IVCC delivers its objectives. Larry holds a BSc in Horticulture from Kansas State University, an MBA in Marketing from National University and a PMP (Project Management Professional) certification. Prior to IVCC he had a 22 year career at Bayer, and its legacy companies. At Bayer, Larry held roles including Customer Service, Technical Sales, Technical Service, Field Development and Project Management for the Environmental Science and Crop Science divisions. His areas of expertise lie within 11 years of Field Development experience that includes Crop Protection, Turf and Ornamentals, Industrial Vegetation, Pest Control and Public Health. For the last 6 years Larry held a Senior Project Manager role that encompassed Wheat, Corn, Soybeans, Rapeseed Oil, Cotton and various Horticultural crops. Projects were divided into novel compounds, as well as existing compounds that have been repurposed for new uses. He has been instrumental in bringing two new vector control products to market, in addition to various Pest Control products that encompassed baits and sprays.

Dr Jason Richardson
Technical Manager
Technical development

Jason provides matrix support to a wide range of projects to develop and deliver new vector control tools, with a focus on innovation and outdoor/residual transmission. Jason graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in biology from Vanderbilt University. He also has a Master of Science in Entomology from Clemson University and a PhD in Microbiology from Colorado State University. He joined IVCC after he retired from the U.S. Army, after serving 22 years as a medical entomologist. Key positions during his military career included: Director of the Entomology Program of the Walter Reed Project in Kenya, Director of Department of Entomology at the Armed Forces Research Institute Medical Sciences (AFRIMS) in Thailand and Chief of the Entomology Branch at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). He concluded his military career managing and directing translational research programs focused on developing new tools to prevent mosquito-borne diseases (as the Program Manager of the Deployed Warfighter Protection Program and the Research Liaison Officer at the Armed Forces Pest Management Board).

Dr Laura Roberts
Communications Manager

Laura supports the full breadth of IVCC’s communications strategy, with a particular focus on digital strategy, including website and social media. She also leads on communications support for individual programmes and projects, e.g. The New Nets Project. Laura also co-chairs IVCC’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Laura holds an MSci in Geology and a PhD in Geophysics, both from The University of Liverpool. Prior to joining IVCC, Laura worked at the Development Studies Association, a UK based membership organisation for those studying, researching, and teaching in the field of global development. Laura has also held communication positions at the University of Sheffield, PDS Group and the European Geosciences Union, in Munich.

Dr Graham Small
Senior Technical Manager
Technical development

Graham’s role as Senior Technical Manager means that he is responsible for forecasting the capacity for trials associated with IVCC projects and for placing these trials with IVCC’s network of collaborating trials facilities in Africa. He is responsible for supporting the GLP certification of collaborating African trials facilities, for trials quality management and for facility relationship management. He is also technical lead and support on new and repurposed active ingredient projects, insecticide analysis, formulation and biochemistry projects. Graham graduated with a BSc(Hons) in Zoology from the University of Dundee and went on to gain a PhD on the biochemistry of insecticide resistance from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Before joining IVCC, Graham was previously Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Cardiff University, Technical and Company Director at i2LResearch Ltd, Founder and Technical Consultant of the Insect Control Technical Consultancy, a Member of ESAC and a WHO consultant on GLP certification. He is also a Member of the Research Quality Association.

Dr Janneke Snetselaar
Senior Technical Manager | Entomology
Technical development

In her role as Senior Technical Manager, Janneke is responsible for managing laboratory and field trials designed to support product development projects. She works closely with IVCC’s network of collaborating trials facilities in Africa and the UK and provides technical support across IVCC’s operations with a specific focus on the ITN portfolio.

Janneke holds a BSc and MSc in Biology from Wageningen University, with a specialisation in bio-interactions, and is currently undertaking a PhD in Medical Entomology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Between 2015-2020, Janneke worked as a Research Fellow at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and as a Study Director in the GLP compliant KCMUCo-PAMVERC Test Facility on laboratory and field trials of IRS and ITN products in Moshi, Tanzania. She has previously worked at Wageningen University, focusing on the evaluation of repellents and impregnated textiles against malaria mosquitoes and at In2Care BV in the R&D team, leading semi-field studies evaluating mosquito control tools in East-Africa.

Ioana Ursu
Senior Global Market Insight and Access Manager
Market access & country engagement

Ioana leads IVCC’s efforts to monitor and collect market data related to vector control tools. She liaises with internal and external stakeholders to provide the data analysis necessary for accurate modelling of various market access strategies to inform decision making and prioritisation, and to lead IVCC’s work on forecasting. Ioana’s position is part-funded by CHAI.

Ioana is a qualified pharmacist with a master’s degree in International Health Policy from London School of Economics and Political Sciences and a master in Political Sciences from Université Paris XII. She has 15 years-experience in policy making and advisory services focusing on health technology assessment, pricing and procurement, in the private and public sector. Prior to joining IVCC, Ioana worked extensively in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, supporting multiple sectoral reforms related to the selection, pricing and procurement of health commodities for the newly developed social health insurances, including malaria and TB products. Between 2016-2017, Ioana took an official role as Secretary of State in the Ministry of Health, Romania. For her work in pharmaceutical policy and access, she was granted the ST Lee Award 2019 by Menzies Centre for Health Policy, University of Australia.

Nicola Terry
Finance Manager
Portfolio & grant management

Nicola is a qualified accountant with the Chartered Institute of Management
Accountants (CIMA) and has a degree in Accounting and Finance obtained from John Moores
University. Nicola joins IVCC from the University of Liverpool where she spent many years as
Finance Manager of the Materials Innovation Factory. Working collaboratively with the
University and commercial partners to ensure the success of the materials research facility. Prior
to this Nicola worked in the FMCG sector.

Gary Ward
Project and Business Administrator
Communications & operations

Gary oversees travel and logistics for all of the IVCC staff, consultants and partners. Additionally, he arranges meetings and events and has a number of financial responsibilities, as well as offering support to the wider administration team.

Before IVCC, Gary worked in financial services in Malaysia and Vietnam, creating appointments and supporting networking events. He subsequently worked for STA Travel, in both sales and administration roles. More recently, Gary worked as a business travel consultant for BCD Travel, handling all aspects of travel related queries for the accounts assigned to his team.

Victoria Watson
Project Officer

Victoria provides comprehensive project management support to IVCC’s Senior Project Managers and Director of Strategy, Portfolio and Project Management.

Prior to joining IVCC, Victoria was a Senior Research Associate at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine where she led the CIFF funded Monitoring and Evaluation Programme of HIV self-testing in Nigeria and Uganda. She also previously worked on the UNITAID/ PSI funded, HIV Self-testing in Africa (STAR) project delivering international regulatory workshops, bringing together high-level stakeholders from Ministries of Health, Regulatory Authorities and National Reference Laboratories, to incorporate HIVST into National policy, and was a member of the WHO HIVST technical working group contributing to numerous WHO international guidance documents.

She holds a BSc. Hons in Biomedical Sciences from Liverpool John Moores University, a MSc in Biology and Control of Parasites and Disease Vectors from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and completed her PhD thesis entitled ‘The clinical pharmacology of HIV antiretroviral therapy failure’ at the University of Liverpool in 2013 which was funded by an NIHR Fellowship.

Fred Yeomans
Senior Project Manager

Fred is a Senior Project Manager with 20 years’ experience across economic development and global health. His responsibilities include managing the ATSB development project and leading the Indo-Pacific Initiative (IPI) to develop a vector control toolbox for the region. He joined IVCC from Innovation to Impact (i2i) in 2019 and has worked across a range of product development, evaluation, regulatory and market access projects. Prior to i2i, Fred worked at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) managing activities in a variety of African and Asian countries. Fred has an MSc from Warwick Business School and and MA and a BA (Hons) from the University of Nottingham.

Dr Angela Harris
Consultant
Technical development

Angela is a consultant with the IVCC technical team, specializing in field entomology and supporting a number of different initiatives across the portfolio. Angela holds a PhD in insecticide resistance and genetic control of Aedes aegypti from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and a MSc in Medical Parasitology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. With over 15 years of experience controlling a variety of insect vectors of disease across multiple geographies; her previous roles have included working with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, managing multiple field operations and operational research projects. She led the CDC vector control response to Zika in Puerto Rico in 2016 and subsequently went on to lead the conception and development of the Puerto Rico Vector Control Unit. Prior to this she was a Gates Global Health Fellow at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle, where she worked on the Neglected Tropical Diseases team, managing the vector control portfolio. Here her experience varied from being on the ground working with local and national governments to strategizing building consortia and collaborations for the implementation of programs.

Natalie Lissenden

Natalie (She/Her) is a medical entomologist and technical manager at IVCC. Specifically, her work focuses on Anophelesmosquito behaviour, with a focus on new tools for malaria vector control. She is committed to promoting equality and inclusion in STEM and fostering a workplace culture that celebrates diversity.

Natalie completed her PhD at the Liverpool School of Tropical medicine, UK. Her thesis explored the sub-lethal effects of pyrethroid exposure on Anopheles life-history traits and behaviour, with a focus on the efficacy of insecticidal bednets. The project drew upon field work, conducted in southwestern Burkina Faso. Prior to working at IVCC, Natalie worked at LSTM, in collaboration with Innovation to Impact (i2i), in the identification, design and validation of vector control product evaluation methods. Developing SOPs for durability monitoring methodologies for next-generation bednets.

Dr Tom McLean
Consultant

Tom is responsible for ensuring that the new tools emerging from the IVCC portfolio, and other essential vector control tools, are available, affordable, acceptable and adopted by the populations of the disease endemic countries. He develops and manages partnerships with manufacturers of vector control tools, national programmes, funders and donors and implementation partners, as well as academia, to support this process.

Tom graduated from Oxford University with a master’s degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Chemistry on Organometallic Reaction Mechanisms. He has 30 years’ experience in the chemical industry having worked for several of the industry leaders including ICI, Merck, Rexam and Avecia. Tom has led a number of multinational consortia spanning industrial and academic partners to bring about the development and exploitation of novel chemical technologies targeted at consumer and industrial markets. He focussed initially on chemical and process technology research for speciality chemicals but became progressively more interested in the marketing of technological advances and the introduction of ground-breaking consumer products.

Vasanthan Paul John

Vasanthan is an independent consultant and facilitator on Regulatory Pathways for IVCC. He is also an ESAC board member. Vasanthan has a master’s in Agricultural Sciences and Specialization in Agricultural Microbiology. He has over 20 years’ experience in agri-inputs companies in the role of product development, business development and regulatory affairs. He has 15 years’ experience in pesticide and biocide regulations in Sub Saharan Africa, South Asia, South East Asia and USA regions. Vasanthan is adept in understanding regulatory policies, guidelines and framing strategies for regulatory approvals for pesticides for use in Agriculture, Public Health and Food Security. He has also secured registrations for chemical pesticides and biochemical pesticides for use in agriculture, public health and food security in over 15 countries.

Governance

 IVCC was established in 2005, through an initial $50million grant to the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) from the Gates Foundation, and is a not-for-profit company registered as a charity in the UK. The strategy and scope of IVCC is directed by its core team under governance of the Board of Trustees, who represent a wide range of expertise.

Sherwin Charles
Chair
Board members

Sherwin is a Board of Trustees member at IVCC. He is also the CEO and Co-Founder of Goodbye Malaria.

Sherwin is a Chartered Accountant from the University of Witwatersrand. He spent 13 years in the banking and financial services industry where he was appointed director of one of the first Black Empowerment investment banks in their stock brokering company, Real Africa Durolink Security. He also launched Standard Private Bank and was appointed CEO of First Alliance – one of seven companies licensed as pension fund administrators in 2006. Sherwin then returned to South Africa and joined to start Nando’s starting their treasury and launching Restfin Pty Ltd.

Jon Schofield

Board members

Jon is a Board Trustee Member at IVCC and sits on the Finance and Investment Committee. He holds Non-Executive Director positions with Seddon Group (Chairman), EA Technology, Haulfryn Group Limited and DSW Capital and is a Trustee of The Wirral Youth Zone. He is also Chairman of The Neston Club.

After graduating from the University of Sheffield, Jon joined KPMG in 1982 qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1985. Jon joined a Private Equity backed Management Buyout in 1994, before becoming a Corporate Finance Partner at Grant Thornton. Jon then became Chief Financial Officer at a UK PLC, listed on the London Stock Exchange. In 2002, he established his own advisory firm, Dow Schofield Watts, which now operates across 11 offices in the UK. Previously he was Chairman of Dee Valley PLC prior to its sale to Severn Trent PLC. He also spent 12 years on the Board of The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine where he was Vice Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the Finance and Investment Committee.

Dr Elizabeth Chizema-Kawesha

Board members

Elizabeth is a Board of Trustees member at IVCC and the End Malaria Council National Coordinator at the ministry of health Zambia and the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA). She also sits as Co-Chair on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Malaria Strategic Advisory Panel and was appointed to the RBM Partnership Board in 2020. Elizabeth holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Biology, a bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery and a Higher Diploma in District Health Management from the University of Zambia and a Master of Public Health from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. She has had a long career at the Ministry of Health Zambia, working up to the role of Director of the National Malaria Elimination Centre in Zambia. Here she coordinated all elimination efforts in Zambia. Previous to this she held the roles of Director of Disease Surveillance, Control and Research, Director of Technical Support Services and Deputy Director of Public Health and Research for Malaria. Elizabeth started her career as a medical officer, before coordinating health for the Kitwe and Kalulushi districts. In 2018 she was both an Advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO) and Co-Chair for the Technical Consultation on Universal Access to Core Malaria Interventions.

Alan Court

Board members

Alan is a Board of Trustees member at IVCC. He is also Senior Advisor to Ray Chambers, the World Health Organization Ambassador for Technology and Health Financing. Prior to this he was Senior Advisor to the Former UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Health in Agenda 2030 and for Malaria. He also currently chairs the Board of Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV).

Alan had a long career with UNICEF, where his roles included Country Director (Representative) in countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America as well as Director of Global Supply and Director of Global Programmes in Copenhagen and New York respectively. He also spent 8 years on UNICEFs Financial Advisory Committee. He continues to hold various positions on different Boards in various fields of endeavour.

Alan graduated with a master’s degree in Rural Social Development from AERDC-Reading University.

Dr Keziah Malm

Board members

Dr. Keziah L. Malm (MBCHB, MPH, Ph.D., FGCP) is the Programme Manager of the National Malaria Control Programme, Ghana Health Service. As the Programme Manager, Dr. Malm leads the strategic direction and planning for all malaria control interventions in Ghana. She was the first female Fellow by Examination of the Ghana College of Physicians College, Faculty of Public Health.

Dr. Malm has served as a consultant to different organizations and countries, sitting on WHO committees, and contributing immensely to international technical meetings. She just ended her term as one of the Co-Chairs of the RBM Vector Control Working Group.

An author of several articles in public health and disease control, Dr. Malm has been instrumental in the development of several national guidelines and plans for malaria control in the African region.

Ray Nishimoto

Mr. Nishimoto is President of Koei Chemical, a listed company of Sumitomo Chemical group (SCC) since 2020. After graduating from Osaka University, he joined SCC in 1980 and was Executive Vice President of SCC, responsible for the Health & Crop Sciences Sector which contains AgroSolution, Enviromental Health and Vector Control business with more than 25 years of of extensive management experience and expertise. He is also a Board Member of Malaria No More Japan and Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance. He served as a Board Member of RBM Partnership To End Malaria (2016-2020), an Advisory Board Member of Friend of Global Fund, Japan (2013-2020).

Sarah Russell

Board members

Sue Russell is a solicitor specialising in mergers and acquisitions. She is a member of Hill Dickinson LLP, an international law firm based in Liverpool, which also has offices in Sheffield, Manchester, London, Piraeus, Monaco, Hong Kong and Singapore. Sue has served on the Board of Hill Dickinson for the last six years.

Sue advises public and private companies in the UK and overseas, principally in relation to acquisitions and disposals (M&A), and also with strategic commercial advice.

Sue graduated from Sheffield University with a law degree and also holds the Corporate Finance qualification issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Sue is also a Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and Chair of LSTM’s Audit Committee, Nominations & Governance Committee and Remuneration Committee.

Dr Jacqueline Applegate

Dr. Jacqueline (Jackie) Applegate serves as Chief Operating Officer at PBI-Gordon Companies based in Shawnee, Kansas. PBI-Gordon Companies has been in business since 1947 and is 100 percent employee-owned. Jackie leads PBI-Gordon’s three subsidiaries which develop, manufacture, and market leading products for PBI-Gordon Corporation – Turf and Ornamental Industries, Pegasus Laboratories – Companion Animal Pharmaceuticals, and PetAg – Consumer Nutritional Products/Supplements and Grooming Supplies for Companion Animals.

Jackie retired from Bayer after 32 years of service in the global agricultural industry. Jackie’s career began in 1992, and since, she has held leadership positions all over the world. Most recently, Jackie served on Bayer’s Global Crop Science Executive Committee and President of North American Crop Science. She ran Global Vegetable Seeds and Environmental Science (ES)while acting as the global Culture and Change Management Lead for the Bayer/Monsanto integration. She served as the Senior Bayer Representative (SBR) and CS Country Division CEO for Australia and New Zealand. Her previous positions at Bayer included President of Environmental Science North America, Vice President of Environmental Science Consumer Products, and Head of Global Project Management. Jackie graduated with a doctorate degree in organic chemistry from Iowa State University and earned her executive master’s business degree from Rockhurst College.  She serves on the National 4-H Trustee Board, FFA Ventures LLC Board, and the International Vector Control Consortium Board of Trustees.

Steve Smith
Trustee
Board members

Steve graduated from the University of Cambridge with a degree in engineering science. He qualified as a Chartered Engineer and worked for Unilever for 17years in a variety of technical, and latterly, general management roles. These included project engineer/manager, global technical consultant and manager of a research group.

Steve then moved into the higher education sector and spent 18 years as a senior leader and manager at the Universities of Manchester and Liverpool. He was extensively involved with university strategic planning and governance as well as designing, optimising and managing a range of professional services functions.

He was also the University of Liverpool’s nominate non-executive director of one of an NHS Trust in the northwest of England. He held the roles of Vice Chair and Senior Independent Director.

Steve retired from the University of Liverpool in 2020 and since then has done consultancy work in the HE sector and has been Vice Chair and a member of the Board of Trustees for Association of Higher Education Professionals.

He is currently volunteering for the Citizens Advice charity in Liverpool providing free, impartial advice on a range of issues to local citizens.
