Strengthening evidence generation for spatial emanator deployment

Back

IVCC has started a new collaboration with Tulane University’s Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine to support the generation of evidence to inform both global and local policy development for the deployment of spatial emanators (SEs), including their use alongside insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), and in areas with low or no ITN coverage.

Following a conditional recommendation from the World Health Organization for the use of spatial emanators alongside ITNs, and  the prequalification of the SC Johnson Guardian™ and Mosquito Shield™ products in 2025, interest in this new class of vector control tool is growing quickly.

Several malaria-endemic countries in Sub-Saharan Africa are planning to deploy the Guardian spatial emanator over the coming year. Additional countries are also exploring deployment opportunities through alternative funding sources.

IVCC will work with Tulane University and national partners to generate data from these pilot deployments. The aim is to contribute to the evidence base needed to inform future global policy recommendations for spatial emanator deployment and to support national adoption.

Data will be generated on epidemiological effectiveness (including in areas of low or no-ITN coverage), cost-effectiveness, deployment feasibility, user acceptability and residual efficacy. The collaboration will also generate evidence on how spatial emanators are deployed under programmatic conditions.

Pilots expected to begin later this year in endemic countries. The details of the pilots, including the national partnerships to deliver the evaluations, will be finalised in the coming months.

By working closely with global partners, including those in endemic countries, this collaboration aims to ensure that the introduction of spatial emanators is guided by strong evidence and aligned with country needs.
